Box Office: "Monsters University" Scares Off Competition to Land Top Spot
Perhaps looking for a little nostalgia, movie-goers put "Monsters University" to the top of the box office for the weekend of June 21-23, 2013.
The newly-released prequel to Disney/Pixar's 2001 hit "Monsters, Inc." scooped up a whopping $30.8 million on Friday and raked in a three-day total of $81.1 million to give the animation company its second highest opening weekend ever.
Another newcomer to the cinema this week, the Brad Pitt action-drama "World War Z" grabbed a surprising second-place finish with $25.5 million a weekend total of $66 million.
Rounding out the top five in earmarked earnings are the previously-dominant "Man of Steel" ($41 million) in third, the Seth Rogen comedy "This is the End" ($12.6 million) in fourth, and the Isla Fisher caper "Now You See Me" ($7.8 million) in fifth.
