Weak Box Office Opening for Big Budget "Mortal Instruments" Movie
Although many thought it would be a hit, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” might not be so immortal at the box office.
The $60 million flick took in just $3 million during its Wednesday (August 21) debut. That means it’s on course to earn just $15 million for the week.
Lily Collins stars as a teen that discovers she's part of a secret order of half-angel warriors. The good news? The movie earned a B+ rating from CinemaScore.
This coming weekend, the flick will have to battle Edgar Wright's dark comedy “The World's End,” starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, as well as the horror pic “You're Next,” which both open on Friday.
Despite the weak opening, the cast and crew of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” are already gearing up to shoot the second film in the franchise, with a planned production start in mid-September.
