Matthew Perry Talks Addiction During “Friends” Years
It’s no secret that celebrities deal with issues just like everybody else, however for Matthew Perry, getting clean and sober while in the public eye was nearly impossible.
The “Fools Rush In” actor told ABC News that during his time on “Friends,” his addiction to various substances made it hard on costars Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox.
Perry explained, “Mostly it was drinking, you know, and opiates. I think I was pretty good at hiding it but, you know, eventually people were aware.”
Matthew also noted that he has a hard time looking at photos of himself during the show’s 10-season run. “I honestly recoil. It's scary to look at that. I was a sick guy.”
Regarding the added pressure that being a celebrity put on his recovery, Perry shared, “I couldn't just walk into a bar. Everybody in the bar would go, 'You, you can't do that. I just read that you can't do that. You can't. You can't.'"
He also pretty much killed any hope for a “Friends” reunion, be it a movie or television. “I don't think so. It would be terrible to do something and have it not be good. If we did a movie and it sucked, then it would, you know, blemish it.”
