She's known for her non-conformist fashion choices and addicting tunes, and now Janelle Monáe is telling us all about her career choices in the May 2013 issue of Essence.

While rocking an all-white ensemble for the cover shoot, the 27-year-old songstress dished about her male-inspired style and finding her own meaning in the word "sexy."

"[I wanted to] redefine what it means to be sexy and what it means to be a woman," Janelle explained. "Showing my skin is not what makes me sexy, like skirts and dresses just like everyone else. But I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way."

"I made a decision to be unique," she continued. "People don't ask Jay-Z to take his shirt off when he rhymes."
