Every season, contestants get their hearts broken when they fail to garner enough votes and get sent home. And last night (May 12), James Durbin said goodbye to “American Idol.”

It was a decision that no one saw coming, and Durbin’s demise came despite the fact that 72 million votes were cast, the highest ever during the top four segment of the show.
