Getting the night's festivities underway, Demi Lovato was in the spotlight during the pre-show to the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.

Decked out in a sparkly black frock, the 20-year-old "X Factor" star helped get the ball rolling with a performance of her hit "Give Your Heart a Break" during the hour-long VMA pre-show outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
