Demi Lovato Opens Up About Her Struggles with Cutting
In a revealing interview with Self magazine, former Disney darling Demi Lovato explained her struggles with cutting herself.
The "X-Factor" judge told the magazine, “There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin — that if I didn't do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode.”
Her painful ordeal culminated in a breakdown leading to stint in a treatment center near the end of 2010.
To escape her emotional turmoil, the 19-year-old actress and singer explained, "I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn't care what happened. I had no fear."
A diagnosed emotional disorder, coupled with an eating disorder, may have taken a toll on the teen star, but the support of friends and desire to help others are helping her overcome.
"I want girls to know that it's OK when they grow up and their body changes,” she tells Self. “I want them to be aware that certain things they might do to lose weight can be dangerous - life-threatening, even.”
